NHS Suicide Prevention,
Carers Resource.
Brief: To create an informational video to serve as a resource for carers who care for those with suicidal thoughts.  This bilingual animation will be developed to give unpaid carers the knowledge, skills, and confidence to understand and identify risk with a view to prevention linked to hospital discharge.
Reason: After several feedback sessions with carers, it was found that they don’t feel as supported when it comes to caring for those with mental health issues. This was especially prevalent in carers who were looking after a recently discharged person after a suicide attempt. Carers found any information out there to be dreary and not focused on the toll it also takes on them. To remedy this our clients wanted to create a leaflet (produced in-house) and the animation to give to carers as resources at the hospital before discharge.

Solution: After discussions with the carer and suicide prevention team, we decided to create a video following a carer after their loved one is discharged from the hospital. Initially unsure of what to do, the carer mirrors real-life experiences, but after reading a leaflet (designed in-house), they learn helpful tips to reduce confusion and fear. The video focuses on the most beneficial tips, emphasizing the importance of the carer's mental health alongside the cared for. To keep it engaging, the narrative avoids a lecture format, something important to the client.
The video’s design was made relatable to all, using stylized, featureless characters to avoid alienation. The monochromatic colour scheme gradually becomes more vibrant, symbolizing the carer’s growing sense of improvement.

"I wanted to share how much I value the animation—it’s a fantastic resource with the potential to make a real impact. Not only does it provide vital support for carers, but it also has the scope to reach a much wider audience in suicide prevention."
